Does your computer speak another language?
It seems like there's some special word to describe just about any and every aspect of what's in a computer as well as what a computer can do. Actually, it's much WORSE than that! There are usually two or three terms for each element.
That's because us computer techies love to speak in code. After all, people have been calling use nerds for years, so, why not come up with a "nerd language?"
Let's de-nerd a couple of terms: Operating System and Program.
Operating System refers to the program that lets you use your computer. It's a go-between other programs and the computer's hardware. Windows 95 and 98 are the names of two common operating system.
Program is another word for software, which is another word for an application. Programs carry out certain set of instructions "programmed" by the programmer. You type a letter on the computer using a program called a word processor.© 1998 O'Flare Productions
